BRETT MANNING

Name: Brett Manning
Age: 22
Country: United States
Website: www.brettisagirl.com

At which age did you start creating art? And why do you feel compelled to create?
-Literally all my life I've been creating art. I just can't NOT create. I'm addicted.

What are you inspired by? And who do you look up to?
-When I look at the natural world I am inspired. The textures, patterns, and smells keep my mind turning.. Tall branchy trees, enormous bodies of water, veiny, directional, and organic lines like fractals, etc.... As for who I look up to; anything or anyone that promotes love and progression.

Which influential artist would you like to ask for advice?
-I'm too shy in the first place, but I would love to meet Bob Dylan.

If you had to put up one piece of artwork on your wall and stare at it for a year, who would it be by and why?
-An Egon Schiele self portrait

Tell us about your creative process.
-I keep several sketch books, an assortment of different papers, ink pens, pencils... Really I just like to be relaxed while working, so sitting on my couch with a cup of coffee while drawing is not unheard of. I also listen to music, either folk music or classical.

Do you ever find weird connections between life and art?
-I hope every artist does. It's pretty much the theme behind all I create

As an artist, are you Technical or passionate?
-I am a heart over mind person. I draw what has to be drawn and not what I think should be drawn. If it FEELS right, I go with it.

How do you determine when a work is finished? Or is it ever finished?
-I don't know.. I gues I just know..

Do you think there are boundaries you would never cross in your art making?
-No, trying new things keeps an artist open and more aware. Change is always good in my opinion.

What frightens you most about your art?
-Never settling. I always have to do it again, but a little better with my next drawing... I'm sort of contridicting the last question I just answered now, but sometimes it is okay to stick with a style for a long time, then of course move on...

Do you have any magic cures for creative blocks?
-Spend a week in the country and not pick up one pencil even to write your name.

Do you dream about your artwork?
-Rarely. I have dreams that are visually beautiful and vibrant and they insipre me to draw what I draw, but it's all relative.

Which of your own works are you most proud of/ is most meaningful to you and why?
-My semi-self portrait with the fox on my head says a lot about me... The awkward expression, the mass of texture all kept inside a solid border, the slight disruption of balance in the over all piece... It's a bold and strong drawing of a scared girl and a dead animal.

Which art mediums and brands do you prefer to use?
-Micron pens 0.005 are my best friend.... ever.

What kind of art education do you have? Do you think it is important?
-I have a degree in Fashion Design. It was more like a 4 year camp or something that just made me appreciate fine art more. Fashion illustration is still one of my favorite things to do however...

What kind of career do you ultimately want? And what kind of career do you think you'll end up having (or already have) realistically?
-To be apart of an illustration agency would be awesome... I'm currently illustrating a children's book and it's so much fun, so doing more of that in the future is a must.

Is your family supportive of your art? Who influenced and nurtured your creativity most?
-Neither of my parents ever discouraged me to be an artist. In fact, when most parents tell their kids to go to a regular college, mine told me to go to art school!

Which direction do you see your art heading in the future?
-Maybe larger scale drawings, more detail... But really, I have no idea. It'll just happen.

Who are some of your heroes outside of the visual art stream?
-Many musicians, actors, writers... Nico and Vincent Gallo are constant muses, the music of Vivaldi, Roald Dahl's and Beatrix Potter's stories (as well as the visual work in their books!), Bob Dylan.... this list might never end...

  1. Brett is one of my favorite artists - I own one of her Bob Dylan drawings and I even drew her once, from her own photo. I love her style. Great interviews here - keep up the good work!
